I was just going about the net trying to kill time ,since I spent the whole day doing my graduation project, and I wanted to watch a movie as my prize for finishing the tasks of the day. Then I came across a 2010 movie called "A Man from Nowhere ( Korean Title 'Ahjusshi' or Mister)" starring Won Bin. I recall a scene from the movie where he shaved off his hair topless, and even at that time I had no interest in watching the movie.
Yesterday, I finally had the curiosity to check it out.
Here's the synopsis:
Having once done time behind bars, Cha Tae-sik now leads a quiet life. His only connection to the rest of the world is a little girl, So-mi, who lives nearby. So-mi’s mother, Hyo-jeong, smuggles drugs for a drug trafficking organization and entrusts Tae-sik with the product without his knowledge.
When the traffickers find out they kidnap both Hyo-jeong and So-mi. Mistaking Tae-sik for another mule, the brothers that lead the gang—Man-sik and Jong-sik—promise to release Hyo-jeong and So-mi if Tae-sik makes a delivery for them. He makes the difficult decision to face the outside world in order to rescue So-mi. However, the delivery was part of a larger plot to eliminate a rival drug ring leader, Mr. Oh, and Tae-sik is arrested. At the same time, Hyo-jeong’s disemboweled body is discovered, and Tae-sik realizes that So-mi’s life may also be in danger.
He escapes from the police station and pursues Man-sik and Jong-sik, in the process, he discovers that their drug ring operates around kidnapped children known as ants. Stumbling upon a factory where the brothers have children’s organs removed to accommodate the drugs, Tae-sik prepares for a battle with Man-sik and Jong-sik, putting his own life at risk…

So Mi at the pawnshop
Odd Friendship
"Nothing to Lose, Nothing to Compromise"
Tae Sik in a mission to find her at all costs
The movie started in media res or in the middle of things, so that definitely made things far more interesting to begin with. It began in a bar with some kind of undercover plan to catch the bad guys, and ended up getting a little bit more complicated than planned. The introduction of the main characters then followed showing the unusual relationship between the Cha Tae Sik and So Mi. Soon after ensues obstacle upon obstacle and the dark and painful past of Tae Sik is discovered.
I was open to the movie, but I wasn't entirely sure of how to view it since I relied only upon the synopsis of the film. I found that the action scenes were very intense as well as gory, they are filled with high testosterone action sequences that will definitely please the male audiences. The story was also constructed in a way where the audience needed to think and it was just my cup of tea. I never really enjoyed movies that spoonfed its viewers~ I sometimes find myseld already knowing the ending of the story mid-way.
The way the film was shot was also well done. Though I am not a certified expert on film making and such, I can tell the photography of the film and the editing of the film helped a lot in creating the right atmosphere needed. The camera angles were crazy in the fluid action sequences~ I'm in awe at how the scenes were captured. There were some scenes where the action was so fast I had to playback the scenes a couple of times.
I was never really an avid fan of Won Bin , but after seeing this film I think I might watch some of his other films. He did so well, that is all I can say. And the little girl So Mi, played by child actress Kim Sae Ron, was so honest. At a young age she was able to express herself so well on camera, and it makes the viewer sympathize with her. The other actors Kim Seong Oh, Lee Jeong Pil, Kim Hyo Seo, Thanayong Wongtrakul, and so forth, created characters that were very distinct and memorable. It made it so much easier to view the film especially if you have difficulties with their names. The villains ,in particular, were both entertaining and annoying at times, but i suppose it was more of the actors' take on the characters. They were good-- if you really hated them in the film, it meant they were believable.
Overall, I absolutely enjoyed (and loved) the film and I recommend anyone into bloody and thrilling action movies involving an interesting storyline to watch it. Though everything seems to be moving fast it is a relatively easy film to digest.
