STYLE ICON: BETTY DRAPER OF MAD MEN

Cigarettes, whiskey, JFK, and sex --that's Mad Men in just a few words. One of my favorite television series, Mad Men isn't a critically acclaimed show just because of its awesome storyline with riveting characters and affairs galore, its fashion can solely speak for itself as well. Set in Manhattan of the 1960s, the fashion you can just imagine alone comes to life. Flat presidential pocket square folds to Frank Sinatra-inspired blues and suits to full skirts, petticoats, and Grace Kelly, Mad Men brings back the ultimate vintage/retro-chic.

One of my favorite characters, based on style and wardrobe alone, is Betty Draper. Reminiscent of Grace Kelly, Mad Men's costume designer Janine Bryant has described her as "a character who is trying to create the perfect facade." The show has had huge influences on runways and designers since it first started airing. Most notable among the show's loyal fans is American designer, Michael Kors, who based his fall 2008 collection off of the show and showcased his utmost admiration by requiring all the models to wear name tags reading, "Hello, my name is... Betty".

While the entire cast of Mad Men all have their own personal styles and tastes, here are a few of my Betty favorites. Enjoy!

ALAMEDA POINT ANTIQUES FAIRE

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending my first antiques fair. It was a bright and sunny day, with temperatures reaching the high 70s, perfect for an afternoon strolling through a large naval base and scouring for one-of-a-kind vintage finds. The items ranged from typical costume jewelry and antique furniture to more unusual samurai swords and life-sized porcelain dolls. While I wasn't on the lookout for anything specific, there were a plethora of interesting items that caught my attention, some of which I managed to capture on camera. With over 800 booths and a beautiful scenic location in direct view of the Bay Bridge, there's sure to be something for everyone.

    Gently-used Keds:
     Vintage art deco rhinestone necklaces:
     Various brightly-colored baubles:

    Sterling silver rings:
    Vintage slip dresses:
     Antique gold picture frames:
     Antique magnifying glasses:
    Metal scrap letters:
     Hand-painted signs:

The Alameda Point Antiques Faire is held the first Sunday of every month. Admission from 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM is $5, and free from 2:00- 3:00 PM.

VINTAGE HEAVEN: CRIMSON AND CLOVER BOUTIQUE

In a society where fast fashion is the norm and buying mass produced clothing can creep back to haunt you at any moment, (i.e. that embarrassing moment when you see that one girl wearing the EXACT same dress as you at the party) I often find myself scouring vintage boutiques for unique, one -of- a- kind pieces.  Vintage boutiques can be very hit or miss, but I recently encountered a boutique that was everything I could ever ask for: Crimson and Clover.

Located in Old Sacramento, Crimson and Clover carries a vast collection of vintage and handmade clothing and accessories from the 1930's to the 1980's.  The owners are very friendly and helpful and the best part is that the clothing is super cute, yet affordable.  Most of their garments range from 1 to 20 dollars, and they have a great selection of men's, women's and children's shoes, dresses, shirts, pants, jewelry, anything you can think of!  This place is too good to keep a secret so if you love vintage items, definitely check it out.  Here's a taste of what their store is like and some of the treasures you may find:

    Happy Shopping! :)

ABSOLUTELY ADORE ADOREVINTAGE.COM

Everyone loves a little vintage shopping now and then, and nothing beats the feeling of excitement you get when you spot that perfect diamond-in-the-rough item at a vintage store. So many trends are inspired by looks from the past, why not wear the real deal? This spring, looks such as cat eye sunglasses and wide leg pants are back, and if you're looking for more unique versions of these trends, vintage shopping is a great option. A big issue when looking for vintage items is knowing where all the good finds are- and since Davis has a limited selection when it comes to shopping, this is an even bigger issue for UC Davis students!

But if you are looking to get your vintage shopping fix, www.adorevintage.com is an amazing online vintage source. You can search by by time period or type of clothing that you want, and they have PAGES of clothing and accessories to browse through. Most of the clothing they have is from the 1950's on, but occasionally pieces from earlier eras will come in. You can order anything online and they ship to anywhere!

In addition to online shopping, Adorevintage also has a really interesting blog about vintage clothing you can access from their website. They also have a fun background on vintage fashion broken down by time period, articles written all about vintage, and have created adorable lookbooks that you can go through on their website as well. Basically it's a one-stop site for anything vintage! Here's a little preview of Adorevintage from one of the lookbooks they have up on their website:

This website has become one of my favorites, and I'm sure anyone in search of a vintage piece would be able to find something they love!
