THE IMAGINATION BEHIND THE IMAGINARY ZEBRA

With the upcoming release of Series 4 (available online 5/26), I thought it would be fitting to post part of the profile I wrote on Benson for my journalism class. It's long (even after cutting out a lot from the original), so if you're interested, click 'read more' below to read the rest. Apparel can be purchased here, and Benson's blog can be found here.

Benson Chou spent the better part of his high school days expressing himself through graffiti artwork. “I started doing it mostly in math class,” he says. Fast forward seven years and he’s still expressing himself through graffiti, although now he gets to do it for a living. Chou is the talented founder and designer of the emerging local clothing brand The Imaginary Zebra (TIZ), which creates apparel printed with his original designs. Here, the young, locally-conscious entrepreneur gives us an inside look at how he came to be where he is today.

Chou grew up in Taipei, Taiwan with his parents, his two older sisters, and his younger brother, before moving to the small town of Hercules, California when he was 13 years old. “As a kid, I wasn’t really good at performing arts. I was more into visual arts,” he says, citing both his sisters, who were interested in design, as his early inspiration. Not until high school did Chou discover his interest in graffiti design. “Graffiti is a form of art where there are no rules,” he says. As it increasingly became a more prominent part of his life, he decided to turn graffiti art into an extracurricular activity. Creating the Urban Arts Club at Hercules High School during his junior year, Chou sought to portray graffiti as a positive art form. “I know a lot of people have a negative connotation towards the art and its culture, and I wanted to spread the word that it doesn’t have to be that way,” he states. With the support of the school, the club painted posters and signs promoting upcoming drama club events which were displayed in the cafeteria. The club also customized hats and shoes with original designs for students who were interested. In addition to the club, Chou had his own graffiti crew, which he dubbed TIZ. At the time, the letters didn’t stand for anything; he simply thought the letters looked aesthetically pleasing when placed next to one another.

Arriving at UC Davis in 2006, Chou and his housemate enrolled in a screen printing class at the Experimental College on campus. “I was able to visualize something and make it tangible through screen printing,” Chou explains of the extracurricular class. With the skills he learned, Chou set out to create a project printing his designs onto T-shirts and selling them to his friends to make some extra money. “I used Facebook as an outlet to get my designs out,” he says. As his business became more popular, he decided that it needed a name. His relationship with the letters TIZ caused him to bring them back, although this time, Chou wanted the letters to stand for something. “I wanted something people could visualize. A zebra is an animal people can picture right when they hear the name. And ‘imaginary’ implies that it can be anything.”

Chou decided to major in managerial economics in order to spend more time on his expanding business. With bright colors and playful designs that aren’t too juvenile, his T-shirts have hit the jackpot with college students eager to support local artists. His designs have evolved from his trademark zebra head logo to designs of fun things like old-fashioned popcorn boxes, camera lenses, chocolate bars, beer bottles, and the Heinz ketchup logo in splashy colors. He also cleverly incorporates quotes that he finds inspirational (“dream like you mean it”). Chou’s business strategy reflects an age in which individuality and originality are winning qualities. He treats each of his designs as a collector’s item and refuses to reprint previous designs. “Maybe I’ll make a profit by reprinting a design that was popular, but I’ll feel sorry for the people who bought it early on,” he explains. To many of his supporters, the appeal is in the fact that TIZ apparel is sold in limited quantities. “Everything gets printed only once.”

Since graduation, Chou has been working on TIZ full time, and the effort is paying off. According to Chou, production has expanded, with double the amount of T-shirts and sweatshirts produced for each series and 300-400 views per day on Chou’s personal blog that is connected to the company website. The blog shares his daily inspiration, the design process that goes behind each and every product, and upcoming collaborations. Furthermore, Chou notes that he is shipping his apparel to countries other than the US more frequently now, especially to the UK. In addition to managing TIZ, Chou has found the time to start a couple of side projects to keep him busy. “My friend Cody and I have created a couple of micro websites. They’re single serving websites such as youknowyou’reaphotographerwhen.com, in which photographers share quotes on how they characterize photographers, and everydayIwill.com, an inspirational and motivational tool for people trying to keep up with their resolutions.” Chou is in the process of creating plushtography.com to sell plush pillows that are photography related. “I’ve been really into photography, so I’ve been making a lot of photography related projects,” Chou explains. “I find projects really fun to do. There’s not a lot of pressure.”

Aside from adding different types of apparel to the brand (button-ups, cardigans) and building a flagship store in San Francisco, Chou seeks to make TIZ more than just a clothing company: “It would be really cool for TIZ to branch out and become a creative network and outlet where passionate people come together and work on creative projects. I also eventually want a store in Davis. I want it to be a coffee shop where people can chill instead of just buying shirts. But first I need to create a solid fan base.” With everything that Chou has accomplished so far, his vision for the company seems just within his reach.

BRIDAL LINE: IVY & ASTER

Let's face it. Almost every girl has dreamed about her future wedding, I know I have. I'm a bit ashamed to say I've devoted hours to planning out my special day, including the location, color scheme, centerpieces, and bouquet. But the true star of the event, the dress, has always been kind of fuzzy in my mind. That is until now. I've always known I wanted something simple, but extremely elegant, with a trumpet or bell silhouette, and a short train. No floral appliques or bows, no gaudy rhinestones, no ruching, and definitely no strapless dresses (don't get me wrong, I love strapless dresses, but they're just not for me).

I came across Ivy & Aster, a recently launched bridal line that creates gorgeous, ethereal wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. Created by two best friends (Ivy and Aster) from Atlanta, their dresses are now selling in bridal boutiques across the country. I've happily decided that my future wedding dress will be the one on the left (below) or one very similar to it. Now all I need is a groom!

Here are some more pictures from their dreamy collection.

JEWELRY DISPLAYS

Whenever I come across images of someone's home, I immediately go to their jewelry display. Whether their jewelry is sitting on an antique tray or hanging delicately from a mirror or a picture frame, it adds a touch of sparkle and some personality to the space. I love the idea of having baubles out on display- after all, shiny necklaces and colorful rings are practically begging to be shown off, even if they're not being worn!

Achieving a "carelessly-strewn-about" and piled-on display look for your jewelry is easy. Anthropologie makes gorgeous bowls that are too pretty to eat from and thus perfect for putting jewelry in. I recently purchased this tree stand from Urban Outfitters to hang all my necklaces after eyeing it for quite some time, and I love it. Mannequin dress forms, are also a really chic and interesting way to display accessories (necklaces, brooches, scarves, hats) and cheap ones, like this one, are easy to find.

ALAMEDA POINT ANTIQUES FAIRE

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending my first antiques fair. It was a bright and sunny day, with temperatures reaching the high 70s, perfect for an afternoon strolling through a large naval base and scouring for one-of-a-kind vintage finds. The items ranged from typical costume jewelry and antique furniture to more unusual samurai swords and life-sized porcelain dolls. While I wasn't on the lookout for anything specific, there were a plethora of interesting items that caught my attention, some of which I managed to capture on camera. With over 800 booths and a beautiful scenic location in direct view of the Bay Bridge, there's sure to be something for everyone.

    Gently-used Keds:
     Vintage art deco rhinestone necklaces:
     Various brightly-colored baubles:

    Sterling silver rings:
    Vintage slip dresses:
     Antique gold picture frames:
     Antique magnifying glasses:
    Metal scrap letters:
     Hand-painted signs:

The Alameda Point Antiques Faire is held the first Sunday of every month. Admission from 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM is $5, and free from 2:00- 3:00 PM.

PRINTS AND STRIPES: FASHION + INTERIOR DESIGN

Two trends that I've been noticing during my daily peruse of both fashion and interior design blogs are bold prints and black and white stripes.  I'm loving both of them, especially considering their appropriateness for Spring!
Whether it's a tribal print or a geometric pattern, these punchy textiles are bold and add flair to any outfit or interior space. Plus, mixing prints and patterns can look chic as well! The trick to doing this is to stick to a basic color scheme and keep the prints grounded with neutral accessories (or furniture!). Proenza Schouler, known for mixing patterns, serves as a good inspiration for how to do it well, and Madewell makes good patterned pieces that can either be worn alone or with other separates. I can't wait to pair my florals and stripes! Tastefully of course.

Black and white stripes have always been chic. A simple striped shirt is extremely versatile and can serve as a wardrobe staple for countless seasons. Black and white furniture and walls, on the other hand, are a little more complicated to pull off. They're dramatic and loud, serving as the centerpiece of the room or space. Thus all other furniture and textiles should be kept simple and neutral-colored.

UNDER A SPELL

I recently came across Australian fashion label Spell, created by sisters Elizabeth and Isabella Briedis and was immediately enthralled. Abundant use of feathers? Check. Funky turquoise jewelry? Of course. This stuff is right up my alley.
Having been fascinated by the combination of leather, turquoise, and feathers since childhood, Elizabeth and Isabella initially started Spell as a jewelry label, taking inspiration from Native American adornments and selling their wares in a flea market stall. Before long, they branched out into other accessories (handbags, wallets, headbands), shoes, and clothing, never straying from their hippie chic aesthetic. They recently opened their own flagship boutique, Spell- The Gypsy Collective, which carries recycled and vintage items in addition to the Spell label. It's no wonder that their beautifully handcrafted pieces have already been spotted on celebs like Sienna Miller and Isabel Lucas. I'll be anxiously awaiting the label's arrival to the States! In the meantime, check out their amazing collection and lookbook here and their gorgeous blog/inspiration here.

HAIR TREND: INTRICATE BRAIDS

Braids are my go-to when I'm having a bad hair day since they're not only pretty, they're foolproof. While I love my usual simple side fishtail braid or the french-braided-bangs-into-a-ponytail look, these days, it's all about detailed, intricate, creative braids (check out my rainbow braid post from last quarter here). Whether it's a snaking braid, or an undone trail along the lower hairline, a la the always chic Diane Kruger, these styles are not your run-of-the-mill braids. They're attention-grabbing, fresh, and innovative. So the next time you're having a bad hair day or you want to try something new, weave, twist, and tuck your hair into an intricate braid!
