STYLE PROFILE: DOM KENNEDY ON GHETTO AMERICANA

“Who cares about being cool. 'Cool' is the new wack.
Cool is being authentic. Authenticity comes from your heart, not your head.”

Authenticity, not cool (although he’s pretty fly), was the first word that came to my mind after meeting Dom Kennedy, and I must say, his personal style and music speaks true to his authentic nature. I first heard of the West Coast rapper a couple years ago from a video Levi Maestro shot of him and his style has since enticed me.

Luckily, I got the opportunity to have a short Q&A session with the musician and we spoke on a variety of subjects, ranging from his favorite brands, such as RRL, Vans, New Balance and Redwing, to his opinion on Cali style. Although I can’t agree with him when says he loves LA style more than the Bay’s, I commend him for his attention to detail and LA swag.

In addition to finding comfort in solid colors like navy and black and preferring not to wear tons of logos during performances, Kennedy has a strong affinity towards things made in the USA and quality clothing. Though he sometimes buys cheap clothing if he really loves it, he sticks to garments that are well-made and can be used multiple times -- I can definitely agree with him on that one.

How does Kennedy define his style? In two simple words, he says a lot with the phrase “Ghetto Americana,” and says with conviction, “That’s my style, my life.”

His definition of the term comes from his upbringing and describes it by saying that inner city kids always “put a twist on something, they make it flashy.” And although Kennedy kept it simple in his staples -- jeans, crewneck, and a hat -- he added just the right pop of color with the camo T underneath to keep the fit from looking too standard.

What I found most interesting, however, was that Kennedy looks to the older generations for style. Most rappers these days are obsessed with "what’s now" and "what’s new", but Kennedy notes his uncle and grandfather as two key figures who greatly influenced his style. Take note, kids: old people have cool style, too! As Kennedy says, “If you watch older people, you’ll see future inspiration.”

UNAPOLOGETIC SERIES PART 1

We play favorites, all day everyday. And as textiles students, there are always certain outfits or articles of clothing that are near and dear to our heart. What are your favorite pieces in your closet? Why? For some it's a bright pink pin from their pre-school days that brings back nostalgic memories and for others it's an heirloom passed down from their great grand-mother. In this photo series entitled Unapologetic, we would like to invite all of the readers into a glimpse of our personal style and showcase our favorite items. The looks were styled by each pair and each tell a different story of their take on fashion. In all outfits, we present our looks raw, exposed, and unapologetic. Enjoy!

    Rebecca's Favorites:
Leopard flower - I love this accessories because I can wear it in my hair or pin it on my clothes. It's fierce and feminine at the same time.

Bling Ring - Its worn on two fingers, full of bling, and matches with any of my outfits.

    Stephanie's Favorites:
Gold watch - This was my grandma's favorite watch. Before she passed away, she gave it to me because I always played with it when I was younger.

Green wrap bracelet - I picked this wrap bracelet as one of my favorite items because it has little charms on them, my favorite being the elephant! I don't really like charms though, too girly, but this one works for me.

UNAPOLOGETIC SERIES PART 2

    Jennifer Hernandez & Jacqueline Lum

    Jacky's Favorites:
Red patent wedges - "Bold. Playful. And comfortable."

Floral cardigan, floral doc martens, and ray ban's - "Sweet, but not girlie. Tough, but not aloof. Classic, but not regressive."

Rust-colored lace/sheer tights and giant black headband - "A deep, rich color with a simple pattern is always elegant, while the colossal bow headband is sure to make an entrance."

    Jen's Favorites:
Blue shorts - The ruffles are what make this pair of shorts my favorite, and the light blue color is fun for spring and summer. They just seem to make an outfit more exciting.

Free people floral dress - I love this dress because it's just so easy to wear. Whenever I'm in a hurry it's great to put this dress and some sandals on and be ready for the day. It's also easy to dress up or down.

Oversized striped shirt and yellow skirt - I love oversized shirts because they're always so comfortable, and the skirt is my favorite because yellow is one of my favorite colors but I rarely find any bottoms that come in yellow when I'm shopping!

UNAPOLOGETIC SERIES PART 3

    Ashley's Favorites:
Black cut-out wedges - Classic yet edgy these wedges are comfy and go with EVERYTHING. I also loved how I scored them for 75% off!

Tri-medal flower ring - Found tucked away in my mom's jewelry treasure chest, this ring is one of the only things I wear nearly everyday. When I look at my hands I'm instant reminded of my mom and feel connected despite the long distance. And it def. doesn't hurt that it's unique and has a vintage vibe.

Laura Laine X H&M tank - Ever since I interned for a Danish wonder woman two summers ago, I fell in love with all things Scandinavians. And when I found out that one of my favorite Scandinavian illustrators was creating a line with H&M, I immediately went to the store, but my sister beat me to it and picked it up for me. Check out Laine's designs here.

    Perry's Favorites:
Blackberry BoldYou wouldn't think a cell phone could be one's cherished item, but in our generation, it has become a security blanket. We channeled our inner Linus and found something we need by our side. Because the Blackberry Bold offers security, comfort, and style, it looks great with every outfit. It's interchangeable, styling every individual's personal style. You can buy covers, bling it out, or stay classic with the original leather backing. The possibilities are endlessStay bold. Blackberrys up.

Member's OnlyWho doesn't want to be a part of an exclusive club? My Member's Only jacket offers the exclusivty from its leather material and color. It was a rare find at Buffalo Exchange and knowing that it wasn't massed produced (discontinued) I bought it instantly. I try to find one of kind items that no one else wants or has. Be an individual and choose your clothes wisely. Don't be a part of a statistic, make the change.

UNAPOLOGETIC SERIES PART 4

    Stephanie's Favorites:
The simple high-waisted skirt and classic black blazer are two of my favorite items for the same reason: versatility. They can both be dressed up or down- worn with heels on a date or flats for class, paired with a crisp button up shirt or a vintage concert tee. I can just throw them on and feel confident, pulled-together, comfortable, and chic.

    Addie's Favorites:
Vintage black chiffon long sleeve top with floral cutouts
Not only is the black top beautiful it is also a one of a kind vintage treasure, found at the Rosebowl Swap Meet in Pasadena, Ca. It is one of my favorite pieces because of its sentimental value. I love that the top is one of a kind and whenever I wear it I am transported to my beautiful day of thrifting at one of my favorite shopping destinations.

Black and white African, geometric print tank dress
This dress is one of my favorites because it brings me back to the long days of summer. Not only is it stylish but also very comfortable, just an all around easy and breezy dress. The black and white pattern gives the simple silhouette of the dress some pizzazz while still allowing it to act almost as a neutral, because it can be paired with any color or accessory imaginable.

We hope you enjoyed the Unapologetic Series!! :)

REFINERY 29 X SF

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the site Refinery 29. It is an American lifestyle and fashion news report covering everything from beauty trends, new stores, and odd little tid bits happening from coast to coast. As one of my favorite sites to peruse while online surfing, I was immediately excited that they started including a special section on what's happening in San Francisco. Refinery 29 San Francisco launched on April 18 and has been featuring stories on hill-friendly heels and a few favorite SF eateries from local chefs, yum! Can't wait to explore all new stores and sites they feature on the Bay!

RHYTHMIC STYLIN': MARA HRUBY

Mara Hruby, a Bay Area musician caught my eye a couple month's ago on my friend Charlene's blog. Her voice is so pure and free and completely raw. Other than her music, I'm drawn to her personal style. She easily transitions from Old School Hollywood Glamour to Downtown Cool, in an effortless manner and still remains true to herself. Here are a couple of my favorite outfits from her:

And last but not least, watch her new music video for Stereolab (Lose Myself).

JAY-Z'S NEW SITE LIFE + TIMES

I was reading an interview Gwyneth Paltrow held with Jay-Z on Goop and found out that he had a new website and of course I had to check it out right away. Unlike other sites/blogs, Jay-Z and his team offer readers a fresh perspective on Life and Times. Instead of just covering what's new and what's hot right now, they delve into something deeper, giving us a glimpse of their inspiration sources and share what they love right now. The topics range from style, art, music, and sports and even has a section on Jay's vision. Click here to get inspired.
