SHEER LIPSTICKS

Sheer and shiny is the new form of lipstick. MAC has came out with Sheen Supreme lipsticks that replaced everyone's favorite Slimshines. They are pigmented to the point where you can somewhat stil see your lips without the full impact of a lipstick. They are like a lipstick and a gloss in one. Also on the sheer lipstick bandwagon are Chanel Rouge Coco Shines. These are similar to the MAC ones, but on three times the price, wide range of colors, and less pigmentation. Both of these lipsticks give off that "sorbet effect" with that see-through your skin finish and are mess/worry free.

HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT: CABOOSES AND CORSETS

One of my favorite movies is Vanity Fair. It's a favorite because of the extravagant costumes. I'm a sucker for yards of velvet and lacy detailing. The movie is set in the later portion of the 19th century, roughly 1845. The marks the late Romantic era, which was the emergence of Italian operas  such as Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, where the "Here Comes The Bride" tune is derived from, and Barber of Seville Overture by Gioachino Rossini as featured in Bugs Bunny cartoons. In art and literature came about the talents of Degas with La Classe de Danse and Mark Twain for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. 


Now, onto the clothes: At this point in time, women went from giant crinoline skirts and leg of mutton sleeves to a sleeker more fitted top and a voluminous behind, aka the caboose. Around this time was the British occupation of India which brought in silks and color into middle class wear. Ever wonder what makes up a caboose? It is a modified bum roll, which is padding that is tied above the bum around the hips and  is a tube stuffed with horse hair, a bolster pillow of sorts. Over a petticoat and then the dress and any added train fabric.

After that came the more realistic silhouette with a fitted top, open collar and tame triangular bottom. Then after came the more tubular dresses and the caboose disappeared. And as we can see the costumes speak for itself, and i must say these costumes are pretty accurate for the styling of the time, even though things such as pushup bras and colored nylons didn't appear til centuries after. I'd write more, but then it would end up as a costume history lesson.

DIY: THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Who knew that Dorothy was ahead of the times with a pair of sparkly red shoes. Fast forward to now in 2011 glitter shoes are all the rage. A pair of glitter heels can range from $30 to $200+. Don't feel like shelling out the cash for it? It's really easy to take your old pair of shoes and jazz them up.


FOUR EASY STEPS
1. Use crafting glue that bonds glitter to fabrics such as Gem Tac or Modge Podge and spread it onto the shoe evenly with a painter sponge


2. Dust a fine glitter  with a color of your choice onto the glue.


3. Repeat on the whole shoe(s).


4. Seal with a acrylic spray or hairspray.

BRIGHT EYES & JUICY LIPS

Spring is here, so that means it's time to break out of the deep lips and neutral shadows and jump into fun bright eyes and lips. Here are some trends to try on, but not all at once. Unless looking like a coloring book is your thing.

 

Juicy Tangerine Lips



The juicy lips look consists of a lipstick that is brighter than your average orange or pink. It brightens up your face without looking overbearing. Don't want to fully commit to an orange lipstick? Try a bright orange gloss instead. It gives that brightening effect without the full on orange impact.


Bright Eyes




 
The bright eyes look is a fun one as well, and allows for more color options. Bright turquoise, pinks, purples, greens, the possibilities are endless. Note that in the color stays on the lid and not any higher, otherwise it causes the whole eye area to look sickly. Since there aren't any rules in makeup, have fun with these trends!
